#1078 Student Success!

This week we were very pleased to hear from long-time photo student, Al Garner.

Al won a contest hosted by Darwin Wiggett‘s Oopoomoo!

Darwin is a well known stock photographer and photo educator from Alberta.

I was very excited. Al took his first photo workshop with us many, many years ago. He had some good photos for a beginner but, erm, had lots to learn.

Over the next ten years Al took many of our courses – some twice! Steadily Al gained valuable skills and confidence that helped him create beautiful work.

Al says:
“Hi Folks: Something pretty exciting for me has happened. The website oopoomoo.com, which is run by Darwin Wiggett and Samantha Chrysanthou ran a contest. I submitted a photo and to my surprise and delight it was chosen as one of three winners.  The other two shots are amazing so be included with them is really nice.

PS  special thanks to Harry for all the help and encouragement over many years!

 Al”

See Al’s winning photo and the other two winners at Oopoomoo…

Congratulations Al!
I’m proud of you!

#1017 Winner!!

Last week we offered photo tips on better self portraits.
Seems we hit a hot topic!

We also asked you to share YOUR Selfies and we promised we would post one on the blog.

Virginia sent us her Selfie below.

We liked the creative element immediately and, in the end, it was the ‘different’ and fresh perspective that won us over… and won her a three month free membership on our Online Photo Program.

#982 Photo Contest Winners Announced

In July we launched our 2nd annual photo contest for past students and we were very happy to see the results. Entires were diverse and spoke highly of the hard work (and fun) students have invested in their photo skills.

Ottawa photo contest

We selected four winners.

What were our criteria?
We were looking for:
• diversity in the photos
• technical excellence
• something different… There are many, many good photos out there – we wanted something that would catch the eye and make someone smile. We’ve always preached “Do something different.” Each of the winning photos stood above the norm.

We’re very proud of all of our students.

Photography is tough. During the last ten years digital camera manufacturers have erroneously preached “EASY.” It’s NOT easy. It takes skill, perseverance, passion and many years of time to develop skills.

All the winners have been involved with our lessons for YEARS!

Alan and Cheryl have separately taken (almost) every course we’ve offered. They have taken a couple of courses more than once. Both are currently enrolled in our Online Photo Program with monthly challenges.

Yesterday Cheryl sent me a note after learning about her win: “I would have never got that photo if it wasn’t for your great teaching ability and getting me out of the box of ho hum photography.

Eryck started with the Pro Hockey photo workshop and has grown from there reading our photo tips and newsletters, etc.

Morina completed our ProProgram last year and has taken many of our courses. She commented about Natural Light Portraits – “Superbly challenging, informative, exciting & very practical!

Thanks for sticking with us to develop your skills.

The winners all receive a free three month membership of our Online Photo Program.
Congratulations!

#975 Exposed! Photo Newsletter – Photo Tips = Better Pictures

Photos are easy to make – aim and click. Almost everybody has a camera device and there are trillions of, erm, bad photos out there.

Good photos take time and patience and learning…

How would you:
• make white snow white? (most people produce gray snow)
• make a waterfall turn into a milky smooth masterpiece?
• showing a hint of motion in the water and oars while keeping the boat and background crisp?

Regular photo tips can help!

In this edition of Exposed! we offer some of the most important (and fun) tips.

Read the tips.

Photo Tip #201 – Anticipate your subject’s actions.

#951 – Music Photo Contest Winner!

We have a come-from-behind winner in the Music Photo Contest linked to the John Rowlands’ Music Exhibition coming up on June 8th.

Jacqueline Barisan of Niagara Falls, Ont, photographed The Wholigans on July 14, 2012 at the Q107 Summer Bash in Toronto, Ontario and sent in the photo to the contest in the last week.

Some quick voting from fans sent this photo quickly to number one spot! Thanks to everyone that entered and voted!

Wholigans © Jacqueline Barisan

On her photo background she says:
Photography has always been a great passion to me. It wasn’t until 2009 that I decided to pick up the camera again & start shooting.

I shot a lot of wildlife & landscape … A few years back I entered a photo to Canadian Geographic & it was published…. I have had no schooling in this field but always just had a natural eye for it.

I met up with some friends one night in Toronto & was introduced to the promotions guru from radio station Q107. He invited me out to many of their shows & it was then I decided to shoot live music concerts … I feel something different when I photograph bands, I get lost in the moment & feel in control.

Currently, I have been working alongside Canadian Country Artist Chelsea Crites.

Networking, my personality & natural talent has got me this far & I hope one day to make a full time living at it … maybe I’ll get my lucky break soon I keep saying!

On John Rowlands’ work she adds:
His pictures tell a story & show his personal connection. There’s a uniqueness to the photos – his own mark …. a true inspiration to me … I would love to learn from him!

Jacqueline’s photo has won a spot at John Rowlands’ Music photography Exhibition:
June 8th, 2013 from noon to night
Ottawa Studio Works
160 Preston St,
Ottawa, On.

We are collecting donations at the exhibition for the Ottawa Food Bank!
