December 21st, 2011

In November, we offered the Blacksmith Photo Safari near Ottawa.

Voom.

It sold out quickly.

And it went well – flying sparks, smiles and many clicks.

Stay tuned for another Blacksmith Photo Safari in 2012. We do have the Composition Photo Safari coming up in January as well as Creative Fun and Portraits photo classes. Also stay tuned for something to do with horses. Coming soon.

Below are a few photos from John Rathwell and Lee B. And thanks to Marc for pounding the steel and showing us your work!!

#725 Open hours at the photo studio

December 19th, 2011

Our studio has been open for business for 15 months. We operate Ottawa Studio Works as a multi use space – photo studio, gallery & exhibition space, client meeting space + classroom for photo workshops. We have never offered store hours. It’s always been by appointment.

But we’ve often seen people peering through the windows, received emails about the artwork and last week while in a meeting one woman came in to inspect the artwork. “I’ve always wanted to come in and see the artwork. May I loo around?!”

Ok…

We get the hint.

Studio Open Hours

We’re introducing some limited “open” hours. We’ll be open for browsing on occasion. This week we’ll be open to the public at the studio.

Hours:

Thursday, December 22nd, from approx 5-8pm.

Tuesday, December 27th, from approx 11:30-2pm.

Location:

160 Preston St. (between Somerset and Gladstone)

Ottawa

Map

  • Come visit.
  • Be nosy.
  • Ask questions.
  • Say ‘hi.’
  • Or, if you’re really leaving things to the last minute, pick up some last minute gifts, big or small.

See you Thursday.

#724 DIY Portrait Photos on the Blog

December 18th, 2011

Our first Do-It-Yourself Portrait season captured many smiles and much laughter.

This fall we offered the first DIY portrait session at our photo studio on Preston St. in Ottawa.

How it works:

• Book an hour at the studio

• Arrive with your people

• Plug your camera into our studio lights…

• … and shoot!

• At the end unplug and walk away with photos on your memory card – easy!

People loved it!

The studio was filled with giggles and laughter – we heard much fun and saw fun results – some results are below.

We will be offering the service again – possibly for Mother’s Day and definitely in fall 2012 in preparation for Christmas. Let us know if you would like a reminder. The introductory price of $125 for an hour will be going up a bit in the new year. Thanks to everyone who made us smile!

#722 Exposed! Photo Newsletter – Holiday Snaps vs Making Masterpieces

December 14th, 2011

I met with two students recently whose goals were to take better photos. “Like these!” they exclaimed as they showed me spectacular photos from a variety of websites. “How do I get photos like those?” they asked.

It takes time and patience.

In this edition of Exposed! we look at the difference between Holiday Snapshots and Stunning Masterpeices.

#720 New Photography Classes – Create a photo narrative of still photographs into a video with David Trattles

December 8th, 2011

Yesterday we announced some good fortune – two new landscape based photo course offerings with J David Andrews.

Today we are trumpeting some more good fortune. Dave Trattles will be back in Ottawa to teach a new course based on his expertise  of social documentary photography called:

Developing a Photo Narrative with David Trattles

Based on his past (and very popular) course – “Social Documentary Photography with David Trattles” – David has created a new course based on his unique principles of social documentary photography but adding a twist.

His new curriculum has students shooting a social documentary assignment on regular DSLR cameras and turning the resulting photos into a one minute video presentation using simple, available software – no video skills needed!
