#288 More student race photos

Ok… this is the last set, it seems, of student photos from our sport sessions photo workshop based around motion and bike racing at Ottawa’s NRC training race hosted by Ross Knight.

Students have progressed nicely. We have our critique session this week. See more photos below.

Missed this workshop? Consider the next Sport photo Workshop in August or Creative Fundamentals in September.

Thanks to the participants!

#287 Athlete Portrait

Recently, I did some work for a local athlete who has been involved with the Ottawa Rowing Club for years. She has wanted some sport portraits for herself for a long time. With the arrival of a new boat she decided this was the time.

I followed in a ‘coach boat’ with a driver working to get me in the correct spots. I have a broad selection of work. A sample, below, printed with permission:

#282 Uh-oh!

Uh-oh was right!

Last week I hopped on our data crunching computer – a Mac that processes large files. I heard sounds similar to a hamster running on a squeaky hamster wheel or, ahem, a failing hard drive.

We lost the hard drive, but not important data. Thank goodness.

While our archive system is not perfect, we have backed up data in different ways over the years:

  • film
  • CDs and DVDs
  • LaCie external hard drives

We now back up info:

I called Pat Castel at ProMac911.com for help. Thanks Pat. He made recovery and new hard drive installation quicker and easier. We came through ok. Phew!

Please, please back up your systems! How do YOU keep your data safe?

#281 Keep your photos safe?

I keep the web photo files small and watermark most of the photos I post.

Why?

  1. To promote the work I do.
  2. To say “Hey! These photos are worth something. Don’t pinch them.”
  3. To prevent the following:

It seems a grocery store in Prague picked up a ‘perfect photo’ from the internet and pasted an unconsenting Missouri family on their billboard.

Read the story!

Keep your web photo files small. Post a watermark:

#280 Sport Sessions

Last week we started the Sport Sessions Photo Workshop where students learn to shoot events, sports and motion. This kind of work makes me tingle – it’s where I got my start in photography.

Sport Sessions PhotoWorkshop

Photos are included featuring students in action covering the first session – a bike race. Last night was session two – students learned some advanced motion techniques – see “Mastering advanced motion techniques“.

Next week is the third shooting session – students undertake an assignment at another bike race.

Yes, it’s fun!
