#426 February’s Exposed! Newsletter – “Where to go for help!”

Yikes… I was in trouble!

A student sent me a question about a camera and I had no clue how to respond! I like to think I know a lot of stuff. But I get asked a lot of questions and sometimes need to come up with answers … quickly.

In this month’s Exposed! we look at information sources in the photo world!

#424 Race Photography – Gatineau Loppet

I had a very important job this weekend at the annual Gatineau Loppet – Canada’s entry in the World Loppet ski events. I was head of cheering for my wife and a friend who were racing. While cheering I brought my equipment to document the event.

Many years ago (1993) I got my start in photography in Canmore and Banff Alberta. I found myself a job photographing portraits of tourists at the top of Sunshine Village ski resort.

This lead into covering races and events at the resort and the Canmore Nordic Centre – home of Olympic Cross Country skiing in 1988. I covered World Cup and other less prestigious events. Very fun.

Earning $ covering these types of events nowadays is tough as budgets are small and there are many organizations offering photo services at low, low prices. I pursue better paying jobs now – hence head cheerleader.

#423 Ten years of teaching photography

It occurred to me recently we are entering our tenth year of teaching photography at HarryNowell.com.

In my youth I loved being outside and active and going FAST – mountain bikes, road bikes, xc skis, telemark skis, running, paddling, etc. With time I got some skills and started teaching under the pedagogical direction of many different sport’s guiding bodies.

I also worked as an instructor for Outward Bound where I assisted people in challenging their limits in life through outdoor pursuits – climbing, paddling whitewater, canoe tripping, etc.

Eventually, after a couple of failed attempts at getting in to Teacher’s College, I pursued photography. Years into photography a friend, Shoshona, asked “Have you ever thought of teaching photography?

Bing!

It was a natural progression. I had extensive experience being taught how to teach with many teaching certifications. And I had learned photography the hard way – being self taught I knew the frustrations of learning a challenging skill!!

So in 2001 I offered HarryNowell.com’s first photo workshop – it is now our most popular workshop – Creative Fundamentals. That first session started in our dining room with a class of TWO students – Brian and Heather.

Here’s to many more years and many more smiling students!

#421 ‘Portrait of the Artist’ Photo Show

I am exhibiting some work in an upcoming show at “Arts and Architecture” in Ottawa.

The show is entitled “Portrait of the Artist” and features “a group show of self-portrait photography.” The vernissage is on Friday, February 19th – details below

Portrait of the Artist - Arts and Architecture, OttawaPortrait of the Artist – Arts and Architecture, Ottawa

I have three pieces of which I am very fond and come from my stock photo background where I was counselled to have more people in my imagery.

For simplicity I hired myself to be in the photos and developed contraptions to photograph myself skiing, mountain biking, skateboarding and, yes, driving (safely).

The pieces represent a different take on self portraits with printing (one piece on metal) done by Dave Andrews and some framing done by Patrick Gordon Framing.

The vernissage:

  • Friday, February 19th from 7-10pm
  • Arts and Architecture
  • 1181 Bank Street

The exhibit is live from February 17th – 28th.

The game was fast paced and the photographers did a great job keeping up with the action! We reviewed participants work and I was happy to see the successes and different styles each person brought to the game!

#419 Photography for Communications Professionals

We recently launched registrations for the Photography for Communications Professionals workshop coming up March 24, 2010.

The course has been popular in the past – selling out at the last session in November, 2009.

“Harry leads a focused, interesting, extremely helpful workshop – I got what I came for.”
A.A.

The workshop was developed with the idea that many communications departments need access to good quality photos while adhering to limited budgets.

Training staff to capably capture photos at meetings, press releases, creating portraits and documenting speeches just makes good sense.

The course offers a good mix of:

  • classroom theory
  • practical shooting exercises
  • constant feedback and critique.

Participants also get a chance to network with others in similar fields to find solutions to various common challenges.

Photography for Communications Professionals creates better photos and many smiles on student’s faces.

#418 Portraits follow-up

In January it was Portrait workshop month and we ran two sections of Natural Light Portraits. By the end of the practical shooting session students had tired but satisfied smiles on their faces!

The practical day involved technical exercises followed by portrait sessions with real live humans looking for portraits. Student’s needed to meet, greet and interpret their subject’s desires into an appropriate portrait true to their own style. That’s a challenge. I was impressed with the results!

#417 Ottawa 67s hockey workshop

This weekend we shoot the Ottawa 67s at the Urbandale Centre. This is some of the finest hockey available in the city – players are drafted into the NHL from this league.

Our workshop is full and the lucky students will shoot from rinkside locations. We will also visit Vistek who will give students a good rate on available rentals.

It’s a fast paced workshop. Time flies and students generally end the day with a tired but happy look on their faces.

Big thanks to Ottawa 67s and Vistek for their support!
