#407 The pirates and portraits

Aargh! Shiver me timbers.

We started the first winter session of Natural Light Portraits last week. A second session starts Wednesday.

One of our ProProgram students captured, erm, me looking like, erm, a pirate at the practical session on Saturday and took the liberty to have some fun with the photo in post production.

Hagen says:

Yesterday we had the main shoot portion of the Natural Lights workshop. One of the nooks I was photographing in had a great background. And Harry naturally cruised in to bestow some much needed wisdom 🙂

Anyway, with his mug, I instantly thought of pirates! I don’t need to explain why.

Erm, thanks Hagen, I think!!:

#393 – Creatives Networking hits the ice!

I’ve never seen so many creative people chasing a ball.

Two and a half years ago I started a networking group for people working full time in creative fields. We have 165 members with 10 to 25 people attending per month. The mix of people changes depending on the month’s topic.

Last night we had the annual seasonal social – a time to burn off steam and have some fun with others in creative fields. It was a casual evening of outdoor bonfire and broomball fun followed by festive treats.

We had a good turnout despite the cool (erm, cold) temperatures and oft misperceived ‘distant’ Chelsea backyard location.

Some attendees:

It was a hoot! See some photos donated by Mike Beedell and Jessie P.

#387 The dogs

We photographed dogs on the weekend at the Aylner SPCA. It’s fun, furry and for a good cause!

We had visits from ferociously flapping tails and shy dogs recovering from nasty puppy mill experiences. We loved them all. This year I had the assistance of Nathalie, one of our ProPrgrammers who was gaining shadowing experience.

Nat shot a few portraits this week. Next week she will be lead photographer at the Aylmer SPCA’s Santa Photo Fundraiser. Check Nat’s blog for her take on last Saturday’s event.

#385 Cycling in the city

Recently a reader sent me links to fabulous photo based websites devoted to bike commuting in Copenhagen, Denmark.

If you like bikes, urban photography, bike commuting you’ll enjoy Mikael Colville-Andersen’s CopenhagenCycleChic.com, Copenhagenize.com and his City of Cyclist’s video.

Thanks, Joel, for the tip!

In the early days of this business our main focus was stock, stock, stock and I shot lots of motion, sports imagery – like the city bike commuter, below.

Stock photography is the niche whereby people shoot imagery without specific buyers in mind, usually letting agencies find the sales. Below is a cross processed photo from our early days. I acted as model and photographer – yep that’s me on the bike:

#382 Assignment Spotlight

I just handed in an assignment for Westboro Academy in Ottawa. The school is in need of some promotional photography. Most of the existing photos on their site were donated by volunteers. They wanted better and up to date photos suitable to attract students!

I had worked, photographically, with the school’s Headmaster for years while she taught at a private school near Montebello, Quebec.

Westboro needed many photos, quickly and on budget. I proposed a plan of action and spent a day shooting to meet their goals. They loved the results. They will be rebuilding their web site in the months ahead.

Below is an excerpt – in the interests of privacy we are limited as to what can be posted!
