{"id":5550,"date":"2019-11-30T15:12:32","date_gmt":"2019-11-30T20:12:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.harrynowell.com\/blog\/?p=5550"},"modified":"2022-05-29T08:14:31","modified_gmt":"2022-05-29T13:14:31","slug":"1161-enough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.harrynowell.com\/blog\/2019\/11\/30\/1161-enough\/","title":{"rendered":"#1161 Enough!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"float: right; margin-left: 10px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/share\" class=\"twitter-share-button\" data-count=\"vertical\" data-url=\"http:\/\/www.harrynowell.com\/blog\/2019\/11\/30\/1161-enough\/\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">I wear a different button everyday to school. <br>Last week one button on my shirt said <strong><em>\u201cYou are enough.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><br>During circle time an eight-year-old boy gently asked <em>&#8220;What does that mean?&#8221;<\/em><br><br>I paused for a breath and the following fell out of my mouth:<br><br><em>So many people are told they are not tall enough, fast enough, big enough or smart enough. <\/em><br><em>Lots of people believe they are not good enough at math or art or reading.\u00a0<br>Some people wish they were strong enough, kind enough, tough enough\u2026<br>But you are enough.\u00a0<br>You\u2019re enough at SOMEthing.\u00a0<\/em><br><em>You just need to find out what your thing is.<\/em><br><em><br><\/em>There was a pronounced pause and the boy quietly said, \u201c<em>That is wise.<\/em>\u201d<br>I\u2019m not sure where those words came from, exactly, but they floated around in my head for the rest of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"450\" height=\"384\" src=\"http:\/\/www.harrynowell.com\/blog\/wp-content\/YouAreEnoughWeb.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5551\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.harrynowell.com\/blog\/wp-content\/YouAreEnoughWeb.jpg 450w, http:\/\/www.harrynowell.com\/blog\/wp-content\/YouAreEnoughWeb-300x256.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><figcaption>My Button of the Day &#8211; thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/IfsAndsorButtons\/\" onclick=\"return TrackClick('https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FIfsAndsorButtons%2F','Ifs+Ands+or+Buttons')\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Ifs Ands or Buttons (opens in a new tab)\">Ifs Ands or Buttons<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We spend so much energy in school and life focusing on narrow outcomes:<br>\u2022 excellence in math and literacy<br>\u2022 being stronger and faster<br>\u2022 attaining a university education<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are excellent goals. But many other traits or characteristics are overlooked or under-valued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/speakers\/sir_ken_robinson\" onclick=\"return TrackClick('https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ted.com%2Fspeakers%2Fsir_ken_robinson','Ken+Robinson')\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Ken Robinson (opens in a new tab)\">Ken Robinson<\/a> describes a story of a student whose passion and skills to be a firefighter were spurned by a teacher as&nbsp;<em>not good enough<\/em> until, years later, his student saved his life in a car wreck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A teacher at my 1980s high school was well known for rejecting a student\u2019s desire and talents in music. Later, the student, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bryanadams.com\" onclick=\"return TrackClick('https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bryanadams.com','Bryan+Adam')\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Bryan Adam (opens in a new tab)\">Bryan Adam<\/a>s rocketed to fame and fortune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a boy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dyslexicadvantage.org\/creator-ikea-ingvar-kamprad\/\" onclick=\"return TrackClick('https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dyslexicadvantage.org%2Fcreator-ikea-ingvar-kamprad%2F','Ingvar')\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Ingvar (opens in a new tab)\">Ingvar<\/a> had a tough time in school. His father told him he wouldn\u2019t go anywhere in life. He was dyslexic but had an aptitude to think differently. Despite his challenges, he was good enough to build IKEA from a tiny business to an enormous company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Stephen Wiltshire (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stephenwiltshire.co.uk\/biography.aspx\" onclick=\"return TrackClick('https%3A%2F%2Fwww.stephenwiltshire.co.uk%2Fbiography.aspx','Stephen+Wiltshire')\" target=\"_blank\">Stephen Wiltshire<\/a>, as a child, would not speak. His language abilities were minimal. He didn\u2019t socialize well. But he had an amazing ability to memorize enormous details \u2013 enough to reproduce cityscapes on paper from memory. He is now a world-renowned, architectural artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"real superheroes (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.harrynowell.com\/blog\/2019\/08\/30\/1158-real-superheroes\/\" onclick=\"return TrackClick('http%3A%2F%2Fwww.harrynowell.com%2Fblog%2F2019%2F08%2F30%2F1158-real-superheroes%2F','real+superheroes')\" target=\"_blank\">real superheroes<\/a><\/em> start out with enormous challenges.<br>With support, tenacity and\/or good fortune, they discover their (sometimes hidden) talents were more than good enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a teacher, I support students\u2019 challenges. <br><em>More importantly though<\/em>, I seek to recognize students&#8217; true talents and help them shine. They <em>are enough<\/em>.
