School\u2019s out!<\/em>
Summer is in full swing.
Yeehaw!!!!!

That doesn\u2019t mean literacy and math learning need to stop.
It also doesn\u2019t mean you need to pull a chair to a desk and do some worksheets.

Let the learning continue \u2013 but hide it in summer activities! See some literacy\/numeracy learning ideas below:

Summer Literacy<\/strong>
These games are geared to elementary children and can be played anytime there\u2019s some downtime, not just on roadtrips:

\u2022\u00a0I spy literacy games<\/strong>\u2013 \u201cI see something beginning with t and ending in e.\u201d \u2026 \u201cTREE\u201d\u2026 \u201cWhat letters go in that word?\u201d

\u2022\u00a0Story circle<\/strong>\u2013 Each person adds a sentence, verbally, to an ever-growing story. The story will be silly but reinforces communication and connections.
Person 1\u2026 \u201cWe arrived at the beach and jumped in the water when suddenly\u2026\u201d<\/em>
Person 2\u2026 \u201ca submarine floated up beside me.\u201d<\/em>
Person 3\u2026 \u201cThe submarine opened and out came 26 cats\u2026\u201d<\/em>
Person 4\u2026 \u201c…Who did not like getting wet!\u201d<\/em>
Person 1\u2026 \u201cMy Dad rolled his eyes and said \u2018Why are cats driving a submarine?!\u2019\u201d<\/em>
Person 2\u2026 \u201cWe HAVE to help the cats!\u201d<\/em>
Person 3\u2026 \u201cBut, how?!\u2026\u201d<\/em>
etc…

\u2022\u00a0Visit your library!<\/strong> There is hours of adventure found in a library. There\u2019s still time to join the TD Summer Reading Club<\/a>.

\u2022\u00a0Read to your children.<\/strong> Anytime, anywhere. Research supports that reading to your children is a very good idea<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Counting allowance money is (hidden) math!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Summer Numeracy 
\u2022 \u201cWho wants some money?!\u201d<\/em><\/strong>
My son\u2019s day camp had a cantina. He wanted $2 for a treat. I gave him my loose change jar so he could collect the $2 himself. With a little support and guidance you have a motivated mathemetician!

\u2022<\/strong>\u201cWho wants cookies?!\u201d<\/strong><\/em>
Bake some cookies (or anything!) with your children. Get them to read and measure from the recipe = literacy and numeracy (and cookies!) Motivated mathematician strikes again!

\u2022 Tables turned\u2026<\/strong>
Get children to try to stump YOU with their hardest math questions.

Hehe\u2026 Who likes to stump their moms and dads?! Their questions may be silly and not illustrate perfect math. This math inquiry offers a chance to build on their math curiosity and engage math ideas and interest:

Child<\/em>: \u201cWhat\u2019s a billion times a gazillion?<\/em>\u201d
Mom\/Dad<\/em>: \u201cYikes, that\u2019s a tough one! A boozillion?<\/em>\u201d
Child<\/em>: \u201cNo, a gabillion!<\/em>\u201d
Mom\/Dad<\/em>: \u201cWow, that\u2019s big! How big is a million?… Do you have a million hairs on your head?… Do you have a thousand hairs on your head?<\/em>… etc.\u201d 

Their ideas and curiosity can be more important than a perfect answer. 

\u2022 Hiking math<\/strong>
Plant some math inquiry into hiking (or whatever you are doing.):
\u201cHow far have we gone?<\/em>\u201d
\u201cHow old is that tree?<\/em>\u201d
\u201cHow many bugs are in that tree stump?<\/em>\u201d
\u201cHow did you figure that out?…\u201d<\/em>

Again, the math ideas and discussion can be more valuable than perfect answers\u2026 Keep the math conversations going.

Science, art, social studies, physical activity, can all be disguised as fun activities, too.

Summer (hidden) learning will keep them sharp!
