In language, some students would rather be doing art. In one period I was asked to have the students continue their pop-art projects (<a title=\"Andy Warhol\" href=\"https:\/\/www.artsy.net\/artwork\/andy-warhol-campbells-soup-i-vegetable\" onclick=\"return TrackClick('https%3A%2F%2Fwww.artsy.net%2Fartwork%2Fandy-warhol-campbells-soup-i-vegetable','Andy+Warhol')\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andy Warhol-esque pictures<\/a>). One student was clearly not conforming to the plan. He was just putting dots on his paper in a reluctant way.<\/p>\n<p>I sat by him and asked how most new art forms started&#8230; He just stared at his paper and dotted defiantly.<\/p>\n<p>I waited. No response&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>So I offered an answer &#8220;B<em>y breaking the rules of art and trying new things&#8230; <\/em>so\u00a0you are creating new art ideas by breaking the rules<i>.<\/i>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me. &#8220;<em>Really?<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yes!<\/p>\n<p>I made a deal with him&#8230; He could create what he wanted but he&#8217;d have to create <em>some<\/em>thing, however exploratory&#8230; His art would need to have purpose. It worked. The theories involve working together to produce a learning environment where all are included or empowered. It works better than expecting all to &#8216;<em>conform&#8217;<\/em>.\u00a0The result is a student or students who are more open to their learning process.<\/p>\n<p>I started working with the ideas behind these theories over 20 years ago when I worked with youth and adults at <a title=\"Outward Bound Canada\" href=\"http:\/\/outwardbound.ca\" onclick=\"return TrackClick('http%3A%2F%2Foutwardbound.ca','Outward+Bound+Canada')\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Outward Bound<\/a>.
