{"id":3648,"date":"2013-03-18T09:57:13","date_gmt":"2013-03-18T14:57:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.harrynowell.com\/blog\/?p=3648"},"modified":"2022-05-29T08:16:44","modified_gmt":"2022-05-29T13:16:44","slug":"922-manual-exposure-mode-madness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.harrynowell.com\/blog\/2013\/03\/18\/922-manual-exposure-mode-madness\/","title":{"rendered":"#922 Manual Exposure Mode Madness"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"float: right; margin-left: 10px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/share\" class=\"twitter-share-button\" data-count=\"vertical\" data-url=\"http:\/\/www.harrynowell.com\/blog\/2013\/03\/18\/922-manual-exposure-mode-madness\/\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>\n<p>On Friday I taught another session of <a title=\"photo course for communications departments\" href=\"http:\/\/www.harrynowell.com\/workshops-courses\/photography-for-communications-professionals\/\" onclick=\"return TrackClick('http%3A%2F%2Fwww.harrynowell.com%2Fworkshops-courses%2Fphotography-for-communications-professionals%2F','photo+course+for+communications+departments')\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Photography for Communications Professionals<\/a> &#8211; a course to help people get better workplace photos.<\/p>\n<p>I met my client and she was <em>nervous<\/em> about shooting in manual exposure mode. <em>This is normal!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>People are often afraid to shoot &#8216;Manual&#8217; &#8211; clinging to any of the auto settings &#8211; because learning to meter the light and set three variables &#8211; iso, aperture and shutter speed &#8211; can be a daunting task. And the consequences of a mistake in a high pressure event are too much!<\/p>\n<p>The beauty of manual mode is that once you have set the exposure for a location the exposure usually remains the same and allows you to ignore the light level until it changes &#8211; see bull rushes, below.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 309px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Exposure - photo training\" src=\"http:\/\/www.HarryNowell.com\/Photo\/blog\/ExpoureBullRush2.jpg\" alt=\"Exposure - photo training\" width=\"299\" height=\"450\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Exposure - photo class<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In auto mode the camera resets the variables every time it encounters a different tonal element within the evenly lit scene (bright snow, dark trees with bullrushes) even though the correct exposure for the elements is the same exposure. (The two bull rush photos have same exposure but the different backgrounds would fool auto exposure mode!)<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 309px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Exposure - photo training\" src=\"http:\/\/www.HarryNowell.com\/Photo\/blog\/ExposureBullrush.jpg\" alt=\"Exposure - photo training\" width=\"299\" height=\"450\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Exposure - photo training<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And, with practice, you can figure out the correct exposure for a scene in, oh, about 5-15 seconds&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>With some <a title=\"Ottawa Photo Class\" href=\"http:\/\/www.HarryNowell.com\/Workshops\" onclick=\"return TrackClick('http%3A%2F%2Fwww.HarryNowell.com%2FWorkshops','Ottawa+Photo+Class')\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">training<\/a>, reading, and\/or practice you can get consistently better exposures easily in manual mode.<\/p>\n<p><em>Remember my nervous student clinging to an auto mode?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>By the end of the day she was nailing challenging exposures in tricky lighting scenarios using manual mode. One of our students recently commented on the newsletter and the difference between shooting manual and auto:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Apr\u00e8s une semaine \u00e0 faire des photos d&#8217;hiver pendant la rel\u00e2che scolaire, je peux d\u00e9finitivement dire que le mode manuel est 100% mieux.
