Social Documentary Photographer Brings Story of Calcutta Boxers to Ottawa<\/p>\n

Close to 100 people squeezed through our studio on Preston Street throughout the evening Saturday night.<\/p>\n

They came to\u00a0see some fine photo art and to learn more about underprivileged female boxers in\u00a0Calcutta. Guests included people from Ottawa Magazine<\/a>, Canadian Geographic<\/a>, Library & Archives Canada, art photography collectors and photo fans.<\/p>\n

The event, hosted at Ottawa Studio Works<\/a>, was part of a one-night\u00a0exhibit of award-winning social documentary photographer,\u00a0David Trattles<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Trattles’ show included a 45 minute presentation on his work\u00a0photographing the “boxing ladies” of Calcutta, a group of young women\u00a0using boxing to get themselves out of the slums. Trattles spent many months\u00a0following the women and chronicling their story on traditional film cameras.<\/p>\n
