It&#8217;s a scary piece of equipment. <em>It is!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Recently, I spent some time with a regular photo workshop student who wanted some help taming her flash. We spent a couple of hours learning and shooting. We started with some traditional portraits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>overpowering available light with the flash to isolate the subject from the background<\/li>\n<li>balancing available light with flash<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>See Sandra&#8217;s success <a title=\"Sandra Finner\" href=\"http:\/\/sandrafinnerphotography.blogspot.com\/2010\/09\/night-photography.html\" onclick=\"return TrackClick('http%3A%2F%2Fsandrafinnerphotography.blogspot.com%2F2010%2F09%2Fnight-photography.html','Sandra+Finner')\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on her blog<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; And then we started whooping it up. I (<em>yep, that&#8217;s me in the photo below<\/em>) started dancing my own special dance &#8211; to mimic dancing at a wedding &#8211; for Sandra to capture with the help of her flash and the available light.\u00a0 The photos below were shot in the same location as the photo on her blog.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Flash Photography\" src=\"http:\/\/www.harrynowell.com\/Photo\/blog\/Dance1SF.jpg\" alt=\"Flash Photography\" width=\"450\" height=\"299\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Flash Photography<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We learn some of these flash and available light techniques on <a title=\"Night Light Photo Course\" href=\"http:\/\/www.harrynowell.com\/workshops\/workshops_night_light.htm\" onclick=\"return TrackClick('http%3A%2F%2Fwww.harrynowell.com%2Fworkshops%2Fworkshops_night_light.htm','Night+Light+Photo+Course')\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Night Light<\/a>. If you ask nicely I&#8217;ll even try to dance for your cameras&#8230; or not.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the night Sandra was smiling brightly.
